AICET Shares Vision for AI-Empowered Education in Korea

SEOUL, Dec. 8, 2025 — Prof. Ben Leong, Director of the AI Centre for Educational Technologies (AICET) at the National University of Singapore, visited the Gyeonggi Office of Education to discuss the future of AI-driven learning and administrative innovation.

The day began with a closed-door dialogue between Prof. Leong and Superintendent Yim Tae-hee. The two exchanged views on emerging AI trends, teacher readiness, and potential avenues for collaboration. Superintendent Yim also introduced key Gyeonggi policies—including High Learning and the Gyeonggi Online School—and discussed opportunities for cooperation in advancing the province’s future education initiatives.

In the afternoon, Prof. Leong delivered a public lecture attended by more than 200 administrators, teachers, and education professionals. He emphasized that “innovation in education is not a technology problem—it’s a pedagogy problem,” underscoring that meaningful AI adoption depends on strong instructional design and teacher expertise.

During the lecture, he spoke on “Building Competency-Based Learning with Large Language Models (LLMs)” and presented examples of role-based learning chatbots built with AICET’s own ScholAIstic platform. He highlighted that the core drivers of AI-enabled innovation are the competencies of learners, teachers, and educational staff.

Prof. Leong also introduced the concept of the “AI Chasm of Death,” explaining that many users rely heavily on AI tools without developing their own abilities, making it difficult to progress from basic usage to true expertise. He stressed that human skills remain essential in an AI-driven future, particularly critical thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to design effective learning experiences.

Prof. Leong’s visit marks a strengthened partnership between AICET and the Gyeonggi Office of Education as both organizations work toward a more learner-centered and AI-enabled future.
