Empowering NUS Educators: Designing Simulation Chatbots on ScholAIstic

On 18 March 2026, 20 NUS faculty members gathered for a hands-on session titled “Designing Simulation Chatbots on ScholAIstic.” Led by Ms Karina Yuen, EdTech Development Specialist at AICET, and hosted by the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT), this workshop focused on empowering educators to create pedagogically effective simulation chatbots.

Starting with NUS project showcases, this session systematically introduced the design of simulation chatbots on ScholAIstic, moving from basic prompts to complex strategies such as introducing guardrails and stages of conversation. Participants experimented with scaffolded scenarios and were encouraged to curate their own.

Ms Karina Yuen highlighted that the value of AI in education lies in its pedagogical purpose rather than technological novelty. She shared how effective simulations require intentional design to create appropriate challenges for students. Through this approach, faculty experienced how ScholAIstic can provide every student with repeated practice to build competence in a safe-to-fail environment.

The participants left with a clear methodology for creating pedagogically sound chatbots, including techniques for prompt engineering, testing with different student personas, and implementing automated evaluation for scalable feedback. This collaboration between AICET and CTLT reflects a shared commitment to effectively harnessing AI technology across the university.

This workshop is part of AICET’s efforts to empower educators across NUS with appropriate pedagogical strategies to leverage on AI in education, and was previously conducted last December.
