The School of Computing (SoC), National University of Singapore, hosted a Teaching Guild talk on 10 October 2025 featuring Prof Ben Leong as the invited speaker. The session was attended by 38 members of SoC’s academic staff and focused on how the AI Centre for Educational Technologies (AICET) is advancing pedagogy-first applications of AI in teaching and learning.
Established in 2021, AICET drives innovation in the use of technology and AI for education, translating research into practical tools for educators. Since July 2024, and under the direction of the NUS President, AICET has implemented a Request for Proposals (RFP) process and set up a consulting team to support NUS faculty in introducing AI into classroom teaching.

In his talk, Prof Leong walked participants through the demonstrations of several AICET-supported projects and tools already being trialed across the school and beyond. He outlined the support available to faculty teams and shared upcoming opportunities for collaboration.
Prof Leong emphasized an educator-centric philosophy for advancing education with technology. He underscored that teachers are central to improving learning outcomes, and that any technological development should begin with pedagogy—prioritizing instructional goals and classroom realities before tools. With this approach, the focus is on inventing and deploying AI and technology that directly empower teachers to teach more effectively.

The event also welcomed AICET’s guest of the day, Ms Julie Rowe, Deputy Principal at the Teaching and Learning Institute, Mabo House, and Director (IT and Infrastructure) with the Queensland Secondary Principals Association.
Ms Rowe works with the state government on IT enhancements to support teaching and learning in schools, with a particular focus on AI, and has a keen interest in learning how other countries use AI to strengthen pedagogy.
